How this tool works

Inputs, units and where to find them

InputUnitTypical source
Schedule variance%Schedule variance % from the baseline schedule or earned value (positive = behind)
Cost variance%Cost variance % against the approved budget (positive = over)
Scope stability1–5 scoreRating of scope stability from the change log (1 unstable, 5 stable)
Risk exposure1–5 scoreRating from the risk register (1 low, 5 very high)
Resource adequacy1–5 scoreRating of resource adequacy (1 inadequate, 5 adequate)

Method and formulas

  1. Schedule and cost signals = 100 − 2 × positive variance % (minimum 0)
  2. Score = 0.2 × schedule + 0.2 × cost + 20 × scope ÷ 5 + 20 × (6 − risk) ÷ 5 + 20 × resources ÷ 5
  3. Variance REVIEW above 10%, FAIL above 20%

Limitations

  • Favourable variances are not rewarded
  • Fixed weights
  • Ratings are subjective

Typical uses

  • Monthly project reporting
  • Portfolio reviews
  • Deciding where to focus a recovery

Who it is for

  • Project managers
  • Sponsors and PMOs

What you get

  • HEALTHY, AT RISK or CRITICAL
  • Health score and weakest area
  • Variance checks

Interpreting the result

  • Act on the weakest area first
  • Track the score over several periods; the trend matters more than one value
