How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Volume value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Volume value
- What it is
- The volume or capacity you want to convert, exactly as written on the drawing, label or data sheet.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 55 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Effect on the result
- Every converted value is proportional to it.
- Get it right
- US and Imperial gallons, quarts, pints and fluid ounces differ; check which the source uses.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the volume was given in; the tool converts it to every other listed volume unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 18 options from the list: m³; litre (dm³); mL (cm³); mm³; hectolitre; in³; ft³; yd³; US gallon; US quart; US pint; US fluid ounce; Imperial gallon; Imperial quart; Imperial pint; Imperial fluid ounce; US bushel (2150.42 in³); Imperial bushel (8 gal).
- Example
- The form opens with “US gallon” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Effect on the result
- Sets the factor applied to the value.
- Get it right
- A litre is a cubic decimetre; a millilitre is a cubic centimetre.
Method and formulas
- Value in m³ = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … m³): litre (dm³) 0.001; mL (cm³) 0.000001; mm³ 1e-9; hectolitre 0.1; in³ 0.000016387064; ft³ 0.028316846592000004; yd³ 0.764554857984; US gallon 0.003785411784; US quart 0.000946352946; US pint 0.000473176473; US fluid ounce 0.0000295735295625; Imperial gallon 0.00454609; Imperial quart 0.0011365225; Imperial pint 0.00056826125; Imperial fluid ounce 0.0000284130625; US bushel (2150.42 in³) 0.03523907016688; Imperial bushel (8 gal) 0.03636872.
- Example: 55 US gallon = 0.20819765 m³.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- US and Imperial gallons, quarts, pints and fluid ounces are different sizes; the US fluid ounce is 1/128 US gallon and the Imperial 1/160 Imperial gallon.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert volume values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The volume in each listed unit
- Value in m³
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
