How this tool works

Inputs, units and where to find them

InputUnitTypical source
Area valueThe number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote.
Unit of the entered valuechoiceThe unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m.

What each input means

Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.

What this means: Area value
Illustration: Area valueA shaded shape whose enclosed surface is the area Area value.AenclosedsurfaceExample: 100Area value
What it is
The area you want to convert, exactly as written on the drawing, plan or data sheet.
Units and format
Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
Example
The form opens with 100 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
Effect on the result
Every converted value is proportional to it.
Get it right
Square units scale with the square of the length unit: 1 ft² is 144 in², not 12.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
Illustration: Unit of the entered valueThe options for Unit of the entered value, with the one currently selected highlighted.m²km²hectareare+11 moreExample: ft²Unit of the entered value
What it is
The unit the area was given in; the tool converts it to every other listed area unit.
Units and format
Choose one of 15 options from the list: m²; km²; hectare; are; cm²; mm²; µm²; in²; ft²; yd²; acre; mile²; square mil; circular mil; circular inch.
Example
The form opens with “ft²” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
Effect on the result
Sets the factor applied to the value.
Get it right
Circular mils are used for wire sizes; acres and hectares for land.

Method and formulas

  1. Value in m² = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
  2. Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
  3. Factors used (1 unit = … m²): km² 1000000; hectare 10000; are 100; cm² 0.0001; mm² 0.000001; µm² 1e-12; in² 0.00064516; ft² 0.09290304; yd² 0.83612736; acre 4046.8564224000006; mile² 2589988.110336; square mil 6.451599999999999e-10; circular mil 5.067074790974976e-10; circular inch 0.0005067074790974977.
  4. Example: 100 ft² = 9.290304 m².

Limitations

  • Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
  • The circular mil and circular inch are the areas of circles 0.001 in and 1 in in diameter, used for wire and cable sections.
  • Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.

Typical uses

  • Convert area values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
  • Check supplier data given in other units

Who it is for

  • Engineers
  • Technicians
  • Buyers and estimators

What you get

  • The area in each listed unit
  • Value in m²

Interpreting the result

  • Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
