How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Air temperature | °C | Air temperature (the formula applies at 10 °C or below). |
| Wind speed at 10 m height | km/h | Wind speed measured at 10 m (weather station height). |
Method and formulas
- WCT = 13.12 + 0.6215T − 11.37V^0.16 + 0.3965T V^0.16 (T in °C, V in km/h).
- Below about 4.8 km/h the wind chill equals the air temperature.
- Example: -5 °C with 30 km/h wind feels like -12.997 °C.
Limitations
- Valid for air temperatures of 10 °C or below and wind speeds above about 4.8 km/h.
- Sunshine, clothing and activity change actual cold stress.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Plan outdoor maintenance or construction work in cold wind
- Set cold-weather work rules
- Explain cold stress risk
Who it is for
- Safety officers
- Site supervisors
- Maintenance planners
What you get
- Wind chill temperature
- Wind chill in °F
Interpreting the result
- Follow your organisation’s cold-stress guidance for work and rest periods.
