The construction problem, and why it is worth naming

Source gap

The "Do not" stem governs only the first clause of each bullet

Read the list strictly, as a reader meeting it for the first time will, and it says: Do not … document them. Do not … put it in appendices. Do not … be concise and factual.

The stem is a heading applied to seven compound bullets, and it inverts the sense of roughly half of them. Three of the seven — negative results, raw data, and vagueness — carry positive instructions that the heading turns upside down.

The table above splits each bullet at the turn, which is how the list is meant to be read. That split is this library's, not the source's.

This is worth naming rather than silently repairing, because it is a good illustration of a general habit: a list under a negative heading will usually contain some items that are not prohibitions, and reading it mechanically produces nonsense. Source gap

The library does not resolve this, and neither does the source

Positions 1 and 3 forbid what position 2 permits. All three are stated flatly, none acknowledges the others, and nothing in the supplied material reconciles them.

The nearest thing to a reconciliation the source offers is position 2's own example — pointing out an unusual correlation is permitted, pondering why it exists is not. That is a genuinely useful distinction: report the pattern, withhold the mechanism. But it is drawn once, for one case, and never generalised into a rule.

You will have to choose. What you cannot do is leave the choice implicit and hope an examiner reads your chapter under whichever convention it happens to satisfy.

How to make the choice defensible

The source does not prescribe this. In practice: state your convention in one sentence at the top of the results chapter — "findings are reported here without interpretation; all interpretation is in Chapter 5" — and then hold to it absolutely.

A chapter that declares its own rule and keeps it reads as controlled. A chapter that drifts between the three positions reads as though the writer never decided, which is exactly the impression the drift creates in the source itself.

Raw data, calculations and the appendix boundary

Prohibition four is the clearest of the seven and the easiest to apply: raw data and intermediate calculations do not belong in the results chapter. If raw data is to be included at all, it goes to an appendix and is referred to from the text.

Negative results — required, and undefined

Prohibition three is the most interesting of the seven, and the source is right to insist on it. Not reporting what failed to appear is one of the most common quiet distortions in research writing, and the reason is human rather than technical: a finding that did not materialise feels like a failure of the study rather than a property of the world.

Source gap

The term appears once in six weeks and is never defined

"Negative results" is used here and nowhere else in any supplied material. No definition is given, and the concept is a hypothesis-testing one — a result is negative relative to something you expected.

For a qualitative study, which is the week this prohibition sits in, what a negative result would be is not stated at all. If your design has no hypothesis, the term has no obvious referent, and the material does not notice the problem.

A workable reading, which is this library's and not the source's: a negative result is anything you looked for and did not find, and anything your data contradicted. Both are reportable and both are usually more interesting than the source's phrase 'a more interesting section' suggests.

Two prohibitions that argue with themselves

Prohibition six — repetition

  • "If you want to highlight something, do that in the discussion section"
