Why the section exists at all

The opening clause is the whole architectural argument in one sentence. The discussion exists because the results section is forbidden to interpret. The two chapters are a single decision about where meaning is allowed to enter, split across two locations, and neither makes sense read alone.

That has a practical consequence worth acting on. If you find your discussion thin, the usual cause is not that you have nothing to say — it is that you have already said it in the results chapter, a sentence at a time, and there is nothing left to bring together. Writing the two chapters in order, and policing the boundary as you go, is what keeps the discussion from collapsing into a summary.

The two purposes, and the tension between them

Purpose 1 — put findings into context

  • Against the literature you reviewed
  • Against the research problem you set out to address
  • Against the limits of your design
  • Against what your field can actually apply

Purpose 2 — interpret so the reader can judge

  • You supply the reading
  • The reader retains the decision
  • Which requires showing your reasoning, not only its conclusion
  • And requires the evidence to remain visible under the interpretation

The second purpose is internally at odds and the source does not notice

"The discussion allows you to interpret those results so the reader can make up their own mind." Interpretation by the writer and independent judgement by the reader are set out as cause and effect, with nothing said about how one produces the other.

A later slide in the same deck pulls the other way — conclusions "should be based on fact and logic, not supposition or speculation" — which is a constraint on interpretation, not a licence for it.

The workable reading, which is this library's: interpretation that shows its working leaves the reader able to disagree with you on the evidence. Interpretation that presents only its conclusion does not. That is the difference the source gestures at without stating.

Too much with too little substance

The risk the source names is the correct one, and it is worth taking seriously because the discussion is the chapter where padding is easiest and least visible. Nobody pads a results table. Everybody can pad an interpretation.

"It may possibly be the case that some respondents might potentially have felt…" Four hedges on one claim means you do not believe it. Either make the claim with its actual confidence, or drop it.

"This has significant implications for practice" — for whom, doing what differently, on Monday? An implication that cannot be acted on is a sentence, not a finding.

Practice note

A test the source does not give

Take any paragraph in your discussion and ask what a reader could do differently having read it. If the answer is nothing, and the paragraph is not there to close off an alternative explanation, it is substance-free.

That test is deliberately harsh, and it should not be applied to every paragraph — some exist to establish that you considered and rejected a reading, which is valuable and actionable in a different way. But run over a whole chapter it finds the padding quickly.

The five guidelines, and the instruction to keep their order

The source supplies five numbered guidelines and instructs you to address them in the order presented. Each is treated in detail at the discussion guidelines; what matters here is the shape.

"Consider addressing these issues in the order presented" is the only ordering rule anywhere in this half of the material — the results section is required to be in "a logical sequence" and never told what makes one logical.

No reason is given for this particular order. Reading it charitably, it moves from what you found, through how confident you are, to what limits that confidence, to how it sits against other work, to how far it travels — which is a defensible progression from inside the study outward. That reading is this library's; the source states only the instruction.

What this material was written for, and what you are using it for

Caution

This guidance is quantitative, filed under a qualitative week

The word "qualitative" does not appear anywhere in this half of the material. The guidelines ask you to discuss statistical significance, effect size, inclusion and exclusion criteria and follow-up rate — the vocabulary of a clinical trial.

That does not make the guidance useless for a qualitative study. Guidelines 1, 3 and 4 transfer almost unchanged, and guideline 3 is the strongest content in the week. But guideline 2 has no qualitative reading at all, and guideline 5 contradicts an earlier slide in its own deck, which describes qualitative work as careful about the meaningfulness of generalising and emphasising transferability instead.

If your study is qualitative, you are adapting material written for someone else's design, and you should say so in your own methodology rather than applying it silently.

A working structure

The source gives an order and no template. What follows is this library's construction from the five guidelines, offered as a starting shape rather than as a requirement.

Building the chapter

  1. Open with the research problem, restated

    One paragraph. The reader has been in a results chapter and needs the question back in view before the interpretation starts.

  2. Take your principal findings in turn

    For each: what you found, what you read it as meaning, and what else it could mean. The third part is what makes it a discussion rather than an assertion.

  3. Set them against the literature

    Specific studies, similarities and differences, and an attempt at why. Not a second literature review.

  4. State the limitations honestly

    Design weaknesses, collection problems, analysis and interpretation problems. Then say what you would do differently, which converts a weakness into a contribution.

  5. Say how far it travels

    What your findings apply to, and what they do not. Be specific about the boundary rather than gesturing at it.

  6. Close into the conclusions

    Limited to what your results support. The rules for this are at drawing conclusions from your results.

Getting it right

Before you call the chapter finished

  • Every paragraph would change what a reader does, thinks, or rules out
  • Nothing restates a result without adding a reading of it
  • For each principal finding you have offered at least one alternative explanation and said why you prefer yours
  • The literature comparison names specific studies rather than surveying the field
  • Limitations are stated before someone else states them for you
  • The generalisability claim is bounded, and the bound is specific
  • If your study is qualitative, you have said where you departed from this guidance and why
Check before you proceed

The one-sentence test

Try to write your discussion chapter's argument as a single sentence: "This study found X, which suggests Y, within the limits of Z."

If you cannot, the chapter has no argument and is a sequence of observations. If you can, that sentence belongs near the top of the chapter, and everything after it is the case for it.

What to carry forward

  1. The discussion exists because the results section is forbidden to interpret. If your discussion is thin, check whether you spent it in the results chapter.
  2. Interpretation that shows its working leaves the reader free to disagree on the evidence. That is what 'so the reader can make up their own mind' has to mean.
  3. Too much with too little substance is the right risk to name. Test every paragraph by what a reader could do differently having read it.

Frequently asked questions

How is the discussion different from the results?

My discussion feels thin. What usually causes that?
