Fourteen learning objectives stated across six weeks of teaching material. None fully delivered, four partly, ten not at all — and one pattern that explains almost every case.

The standard being applied

Each week opens by stating what a reader will be able to do at the end of it. Those statements are the material's own commitment, which makes them the only fair standard to judge it against — not an external syllabus, not a comparison with another course, not an opinion about what ought to have been covered.

One question is asked of each objective: could a reader who worked through the week do the thing the week said they would be able to do? Where the answer is yes for part of the objective and no for the rest, it is recorded as partly delivered, and the split is stated.

A library that reports only what a source contains cannot distinguish a topic covered well from a topic named once and dropped. On the page they look identical.

The cost of not distinguishing them falls at the worst moment — after you have committed to a design, or collected data you cannot analyse. This page is the map of where that risk sits.

Assessed against each week's own stated objectives, quoted from its opening slides. Earlier weeks of the subject — introduction to research, developing a topic, the literature review, ethics and the proposal — are audited on their own pages and are in better condition than these six.

Caution

A note on the figures, because two other totals exist

Two of the extracts behind this library were produced independently and neither could see the other. One reports a running total of twelve objectives; the other reports eleven. Both are correct for the set of weeks each could see, and both are superseded by the fourteen above, which is the only figure any page in this library cites.

That is recorded rather than quietly fixed, because it is exactly the kind of arithmetic that propagates if nobody states which number is authoritative.

The pattern behind ten of the failures

Ten undelivered objectives across six weeks is not ten unrelated oversights. The same failure recurs, and recognising it is worth more than memorising the individual cases, because it is a test you can run on any material you are handed.

The failure, stated once

A set of things is named — correctly, and often comprehensively — and then nothing is said about any of them.

The naming reads as coverage. It is not coverage. The test that separates the two is whether you could act on it. If the only thing you could do with a list is repeat the list, the topic has been named and not taught, however complete the list looks.

Source gap

The qualitative research week

Its two stated objectives are to design appropriate research tools and to evaluate types of variables. The week delivered is a conceptual survey of qualitative inquiry — what the approach is, what its practitioners believe, what it is good at, how its quality is judged.

The word "variables" occurs exactly once in the entire week, inside a quoted table, in the column describing quantitative research. No type of variable is named, defined or evaluated.

A week whose own deck states that qualitative concepts take the form of themes and taxonomies rather than variables cannot deliver an objective about evaluating variable types. This reads as a documentation error rather than a teaching failure, and it is fairer to record it that way.

The qualitative analysis and results week

Its first objective is to evaluate presentation styles for qualitative data, and this one is provable rather than arguable. The analysis half of the week never uses the words present, table, figure, chart, quote or narrative. The presentation half never uses the word qualitative.

The objective falls exactly in the gap between the two halves, and neither half reaches it.

Create a methodology appropriate to your proposal

You get the decision criteria — four inputs, three capability tests, nine selection questions — and not the options they apply to. The catalogue of methodologies is deferred elsewhere and none is described. Criteria without options.

QUANTITATIVE

The first of its three objectives

Measures are defined and concepts are not; nothing is interpreted. The week's strongest content — six sampling types — sits under a different objective from the one it best serves.

ANALYSIS

Plan presentation styles for quantitative data

Seven table rules, three graph principles, one formula, a four-aspect reading procedure — and no worked table, no surviving chart, and no rule for choosing between display types.

RESULTS

Explain how results are presented and discussed

The best of the four by a distance. Around a thousand words of specific, usable guidance on two sections of a research report the library had nothing on. Unillustrated, and internally contradictory on its central rule.

Where the material is genuinely good

An audit that stops at the shortfalls is unfair and, worse, unhelpful — it does not tell you where to spend your time. Several parts of these six weeks are strong, and they are the reason the streams exist.

  • Questionnaire design and question wording — the most concrete, most actionable guidance anywhere in the material
  • Sampling types — six named with usable distinctions, and it closes the library's largest recorded gap
  • The six qualitative collection approaches — the fullest data collection treatment in the source
  • The worked inductive categorisation — thirty-one responses into six categories; the only complete worked analysis in six weeks
  • The results and discussion sections — the only treatment of either in the dataset, and largely usable
  • Qualitative strengths, limitations and validity criteria — enough to write a defensible methodology chapter
  • Table construction rules — concrete, applicable, and the best-delivered part of the quantitative analysis week

The distinction this page will not blur

Caution

A gap in the files is not a gap in the subject

One week's study notes were listed in the upload manifest and are not present on disk. That week is represented by its slide deck alone, and it is the week carrying the entire quantitative analysis content. Its definitional gaps are exactly what you would expect when the definitional document is the one missing.

So those gaps are recorded as gaps in the supplied material. The library makes no claim about what was taught, because nothing in the files supports one.

Every page in these streams keeps that distinction. Where you read "the supplied teaching source does not define X", that statement is accurate and checkable. You will not find a page saying "the subject never taught X".

Note

One absence that closed

An earlier version of this audit covered four weeks and recorded that no material for one week of the sequence had been supplied in any delivery. That week has since arrived, and it turned out to be the week that teaches sampling — the library's largest recorded gap.

It is worth saying plainly: an absence in a source is not always permanent, and this one was worth flagging precisely because flagging it is what got it filled.

Triage by what you are about to do

ThenThe comparison you need does not exist. Use the selection questions as a framework and get each method's properties from a methods text.
IfYou are building an instrument
ThenNo instrument of any kind appears in six weeks. Use the questionnaire and wording guidance, which is good, and get worked models from examined theses.
IfYou are drawing a sample
ThenSix types are named with usable distinctions and no procedure for executing any of them. You have the vocabulary and not the method.
IfYou are writing up
ThenYou are in the best-served part of the material. The results and discussion guidance is the strongest content across the six weeks.

What to carry forward

  1. Fourteen objectives across six weeks, none fully delivered, ten not delivered at all.
  2. Ten of the fourteen fail the same way: a set of things named, and nothing said about any of them. Ask what you could do with a list before you accept it as coverage.
  3. Two weeks state objectives that appear to belong to a different topic. Judge those weeks by what they deliver instead.
  4. The material is genuinely strong on questionnaires, sampling vocabulary, the worked categorisation, and writing up. Spend your time there.
  5. A gap in the supplied files is not evidence about the subject as taught, and this library never blurs the two.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a criticism of the teaching?

No. It assesses the supplied files against the objectives those files state, which is the only standard available. Where a document is missing, the page says so and draws no conclusion about what it contained, and it identifies seven parts of the material as genuinely strong.

How can an objective be stated and not delivered?

Most often because a set of items is named without being described. An objective to compare methods is not met by a grid of method names, and an objective to evaluate coding options is not met by material that names no coding option at all.

Why do three different totals appear across this library's sources?

Two extracts were produced independently, each covering a different subset of weeks, and each reported a running total for what it could see — twelve and eleven. The fourteen-objective figure covers all six weeks and supersedes both. Every page in the library cites fourteen.

Which gap should I close first?

The statistical one, if your project involves quantitative data. You are given one rule expressed in a unit that is never defined, no measure of dispersion, and no inferential procedure — and that gap can invalidate analysis you have already done, which none of the others can.

Does the library fill any of these gaps itself?

No. The commissioning standard is that missing information is named rather than invented, because a reader who knows they need a second source is better served than one given a plausible definition attributed to material that does not contain it.
