How to read this page

Caution

The week has two halves and they do not meet

Part one is qualitative analysis: what it involves, the steps, coding, the vocabulary, the worked example.

Part two is presenting and discussing results — around a thousand words of specific, usable guidance on two sections of a research report that the library had nothing on before.

The word "qualitative" appears nowhere in part two. Its worked illustration is a correlation between two variables, and its guidelines ask you to discuss statistical significance, effect size and follow-up rate. Part two is quantitative guidance filed under a qualitative week. Most of it transfers; some of it has no qualitative reading at all, and one guideline contradicts part one directly.

"Coding is the interpretive and subjective application of symbols and words to segments of transcribed text. You are walking in the participant's shoes to understand what they are feeling and saying."

Two words in that sentence carry the weight. Interpretive and subjective — the source is explicit that coding is not a mechanical operation, which is what makes the absence of a procedure for it more consequential than it first appears. See coding qualitative data in practice.

The ten questions to put to your data

Supplied as a diagram of ten speech bubbles with no numbering, no arrows and no stated order. The arrangement below is this library's; the wording is the source's.

  1. Group events, places, people and so on together if they seem to have similar patterns, themes or trends
  2. Note any patterns, themes and trends — and ask whether they make sense
  3. Compare and contrast data to establish similarities and differences between the data groups
  4. Conduct simple counts to see whether patterns can be grouped by frequency of occurrence
  5. Using a table or matrix, look at interrelationships between different parts of the data
  6. Ask whether there are deviations from the patterns — and if so, whether they can be explained
  7. Ask whether the findings suggest that additional data needs to be collected
  8. Build a logical chain of evidence by looking for relationships between the data
  9. Ask what interesting stories emerge from the data
  10. Ask whether the findings agree with findings from other studies — and if not, whether that can be explained

The tenth question — do your findings agree with other studies, and if not, why — is restated almost exactly as the fourth discussion guideline, in a different document, with neither referring to the other.

The worked example

Source example — illustrative only

The only complete worked analysis in six weeks

Thirty-one responses to one open-ended question — "what are some specific problems needing action in your organisation?" — presented first as an unordered list and then sorted into six inductive categories: management issues, physical environment, personnel practices, employee development, intergroup and interpersonal relations, and work structure.

The categories account for every response exactly once. Neither count is stated by the source; both are this library's.

What it does not show: no rule for deriving the categories, no second coder, no agreement check. A reader can see that the categories were arrived at and not how — because the example is reproduced from a textbook chapter that is not supplied. The three-way conflict at the centre of it

May you explain a finding inside the results section? The source says three things across five slides:

1. No — "the results section should state the findings, without interpretation" 2. Yes, briefly — "present the results followed by a short explanation of the findings" 3. No — "do not … attempt to explain your findings"

All three are recorded; the library adjudicates none. The nearest reconciliation the source offers is its own example: pointing out an unusual pattern is permitted, pondering why it exists is not. That distinction is drawn once, for one case, and never generalised. See what does not belong in the results section.

Part two — the discussion section

The numbering is the source's own. It instructs you to address them in this order and gives no reason for the order.

Source gap

Guideline 5 contradicts part one of its own week

Part one says qualitative analysis is "careful about the possibility or meaningfulness of generalisations across time and space" and emphasises transferability instead.

Guideline 5 says "the purpose of your study is to produce results your field can apply".

One deck, one week, two incompatible positions on whether generalising is the point. Decide which you are taking, say so, and bound the claim accordingly. Both positions are set out at the discussion guidelines.

  • Limit your conclusions to only those supported by the results of your study
  • Provide equal emphasis on positive and negative findings
  • Results of secondary or post hoc analyses should be presented as explanatory
  • Conclusions should be based on fact and logic, not supposition or speculation

What to carry forward

  1. The week has two halves written for different readers. Part two is quantitative guidance filed under a qualitative week, and one of its guidelines contradicts part one outright.

Why does this page cover both analysis and reporting?

Because one week of the supplied material covers both, in two halves, and they need to be read against each other — particularly where the reporting half contradicts the analysis half on generalisability.

Is the reporting guidance usable for a qualitative study?

Mostly. The word 'qualitative' appears nowhere in that half and its worked example is a correlation between two variables, so you are adapting material written for another design.
