Levels of Measurement in Structured Questions

Four lines on one slide carry the whole of this material's account of response choices. Three of the four terms are given no definition at all, the one worked scale is filed under a heading the slide's own wording contradicts, and the authority for the topic is deferred to a place that does not contain it.

On the slide's title

The title says "structured questionnaires". Two slides earlier the deck defined structured as meaning the respondent writes the reply — under which every questionnaire is structured and the qualifier in this title is empty. The two slides are using the word differently; both usages are recorded on Structured and Unstructured Questions.

The five-point agreement scale is the only complete response scale printed anywhere in the supplied material. It is an example, not a recommended scale length: the source states no number of scale points, does not discuss the neutral midpoint, and never compares scale lengths.

Three of the four terms are used and never defined

Only ordinal receives a definition, and it is three words long. Nominal, interval and dichotomous are presented through instances alone.

The consequence is specific rather than academic. A reader is shown that a nominal variable can be coded 1, 2, 3 and is never told what those numbers do and do not mean — whether they order anything, whether they can be averaged, whether the gap between 1 and 2 is the same as the gap between 2 and 3. Those are the questions the level of measurement exists to answer, and this slide answers none of them.

Do not supply the missing definitions from memory and attribute them to this material. Get them from a statistics or research methods text, and note in your own write-up which source you used.

The deferral that leads nowhere

The slide flags its own thinness with a parenthesis: "Measurement: (mentioned in topic 7)". A reader is being told that the substance sits in an earlier week.

The extraction covers that week's whole slide deck and its study notes. The words nominal, ordinal, interval and level of measurement appear in neither. The only occurrence of the word "measurement" in that week sits inside a quoted comparison table and has nothing to do with response formats.

So the one slide in the subject that names the levels of measurement defers its definitional content to a place that does not hold it, and no other week supplies it. A reader who follows the cross-reference finds nothing, and nothing on the slide warns them that they will.

This is not a small housekeeping error. It means the material's account of response formats is four lines and a dead reference.

Interval and ordinal cannot be told apart from what is printed

Read the two entries against each other. Ordinal is defined as "ranked in order". The interval entry gives a five-point scale running strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree — which is ranked in order, and therefore satisfies the slide's ordinal definition exactly.

What you should take from it is a warning about your own instrument. If you code an agreement scale 1 to 5 and then treat those numbers as measurements, you are relying on a distinction this material does not make and cannot support. Whether that treatment is legitimate is a question for a second source, and it is worth settling before you collect rather than at analysis.

Dichotomous sits beside the levels and is not one of them

The slide sets two co-ordinate headings: "Dichotomous" and "Measurement". That arrangement presents a two-option item as a fourth thing of the same kind as the three levels beneath it.

It is not the same kind of thing. A question with two options still has to sit somewhere on the measurement scheme — yes/no and true/false are unordered pairs, agree/disagree is an ordered one — and the slide never says which, never relates the two headings, and offers no rule for coding a two-option item. The relationship is simply absent.

Caution

One of the four dichotomous examples fails the deck's own wording check

The slide offers "male/female" as a dichotomous response set without comment. The wording slide, one position earlier in the same deck, asks whether a question "make[s] assumptions".

The deck does not apply its own check here, and this page notes the omission rather than repairing it. If your instrument collects demographic items, the design decision — what categories to offer, whether to offer a free-text option, whether to ask at all — is yours to make and to justify, and this material gives you nothing to make it with.

What each level permits at analysis

This is the question a practitioner actually has when choosing a response format, and it is worth stating plainly what the material does with it.

The one link between a level and an analysis is made in the next week and is defective

The following week's terms table states: "Central tendency – Most common value for variables measured at a nominal level". Two slides later that same table defines "Mode – Most popular value". The extraction records the two as denoting the same quantity, so the general term for the centre of a distribution has been identified with one of its three measures. Both entries stand in the source and this page does not adjudicate between them — see Measures of Central Tendency.

The same week then states that "the method of coding is largely dictated by … the way a variable has been measured" — a rule that presupposes exactly the understanding this slide declines to supply. That instruction is covered on Coding Quantitative Data.

Both of those statements come from a week that was supplied as a slide deck alone — its study notes are not among the files — so there is no second document in which the missing definitions might have sat.

The practical position: the material asks you to let measurement drive coding and analysis, and never tells you what any level of measurement permits.

The fourth level the source never names

The slide gives nominal, ordinal and interval. Standard practice recognises a fourth level. The source does not name it, does not describe it, and does not say that its list is partial — so a reader working only from this material would reasonably assume there are three.

Here is why it matters, as a general observation rather than as source content: a great many of the measures a delivery-side study collects are counts and quantities — days of delay, dollars of variance, numbers of change requests, headcount, hours. If you are choosing an analysis for them on the basis of this material, you are choosing it from a list that does not contain their level.

Practice note

Write the response format into the instrument documentation, not just the instrument

The source does not prescribe this. Keep a one-line record for every question: the question, its response options in order, the codes you will store, and the level you believe it sits at with the source you took that judgement from. It takes an hour for a typical instrument.

It earns that hour back twice — once when you build the data file, because the codes are already decided, and once in the write-up, because a reader who challenges an analysis is really challenging the measurement behind it, and you will have the answer written down. The material's own instruction that coding is dictated by how a variable was measured makes this record the missing link between the two weeks.

Every set of numeric codes is recorded as codes, with a note on whether the numbers mean anything beyond labelling.
