Structured and Unstructured Questions

One slide carries the only comparison of two collection choices anywhere in the week: eight advantage and disadvantage cells in two blocks that the source never labels. Here is that comparison, the inference required to use it, and the definition beneath it that contradicts three of the deck's own later slides.

The slide is titled "Types of questions". It contains a table in two blocks, each with an advantages column and a disadvantages column and two rows, and beneath the table three short statements. Nothing else appears on it — no worked question of either type, and no cross-reference to the wording rules on The Wording of Questions, which apply to both.

Nothing in the extracted slide connects block 1 to structured questions or block 2 to unstructured ones. The attribution has to be made from the content — "Constrains responses to limited information" reads as a fixed set of options, "Rich, deep information obtained" reads as an open answer — and from the order of the two statements printed underneath.

The inference is almost certainly the one intended. It is still an inference, and it is marked as such here because a reader quoting this table in a methodology chapter would otherwise be attributing labels to a source that does not carry them.

One practical consequence: if you reproduce this comparison in your own work, reproduce it with your own labels and say that you supplied them.

Two senses of "structured", on one slide

The definitions beneath the table and the table above them are not using the two words in the same way, and the difference is not a subtlety. It changes what the comparison is a comparison of.

Take "Unstructured: interviewer writes reply" literally and three things the same deck says become impossible.

It names "Structured open-ended interviews" as an interview type — but in an interview the interviewer writes the reply, so no interview could be structured. It makes "Structured to unstructured" a range along which interviews vary, which the definition forbids. And it titles a later slide "Choices of responses in structured questionnaires", a qualifier that would be empty if every questionnaire were structured by definition.

Both readings are in the source and this page does not choose between them. What a reader needs to know is that the word "structured" in this material is unreliable: when you meet it, check whether the slide means fixed response options or means a self-completed instrument. Do not use "structured" and "unstructured" unqualified, and do not cite this material as your authority for either term. The cost is stated twice over: responses are constrained "to limited information", and the researcher "does not get deep understanding". What a fixed set of options cannot capture is anything you did not anticipate when you wrote the options.

The advantages given are "Rich, deep information obtained" and "Can explore a range of leads". The second is the one that matters most in practice: an open question can return something you had not thought to ask about.

The costs are "Takes time and may be costly" and "Challenging in summarising and analysing". No time, no cost and no analysis method is attached to any of the three.

Read as a pair, the eight cells describe one trade: you can have answers that are quick to give and quick to summarise, or answers that can surprise you. The material states the trade and states nothing about how to strike it — no ratio, no rule about which questions in an instrument should be open, and no guidance about mixing the two in one instrument at all. What each type costs at the analysis stage

This is where the comparison bites, and where the material stops. Two of the eight cells are about analysis rather than collection: fixed responses help you "summarise information efficiently", and open responses are "challenging in summarising and analysing".

It is worth knowing, once, where this table sits. The week's single stated learning objective is to evaluate methods of data collection, and the delivery audit of the week records that verb as undelivered: no two methods are compared with each other on any criterion anywhere in it. These eight cells are the closest the week comes, which is why one unlabelled table carries more weight than it should have to.

The asymmetry is the finding. The instrument the material warns you about is the one it gives you no method for.

The week never returns to how open responses are summarised

"Challenging in summarising and analysing" is the last thing the week says about open answers. No coding scheme, no categorising procedure, no worked example and no software step appears for them anywhere in the topic.

The following week does supply coding — but it defines coding as "the transformation of data into a form understandable by computer software", it is directed at quantitative data entry, and it never links back to this table. That week was supplied as a slide deck alone, with no study notes among the files, so there is no companion document to check. The nearest thing to an approach for open text sits in the week's own study notes, under inductive thematic analysis, which are described as approaches to collecting qualitative data and carry no procedure either. If your instrument has open questions, your analysis method has to come from outside this material, and it has to be chosen before you collect.

The choice is really a decision about your analysis plan

The source presents the two types as a comparison and gives no rule for choosing. The decision table below is this page's construction, built from the source's own eight cells and from nothing else — the conditions are yours to test, and the material supplies the consequences.

Working the choice backwards from your analysis

Practice note

Draft the analysis before the instrument

The source does not prescribe this. In practice the cheapest way to settle the structured question is to write, for each draft question, the sentence you expect to be able to say once the data are in — "forty-one of sixty respondents selected …", or "three themes recurred in the answers about …". A question whose expected sentence you cannot write is a question whose analysis you have not planned, and it will be the one that costs you time at the end.

That exercise also tends to settle the mixture. Most project instruments end up mostly fixed with a small number of open questions placed where the unexpected is worth paying for.

What this slide does not settle

  • No measure attaches to any disadvantage. "Takes time and may be costly" states no time and no cost; "deep understanding" is never defined.
  • No guidance on mixing the two in one instrument, although the following slides plainly assume an instrument containing both.
  • No rule about how many open questions an instrument should carry, or where they should sit in the sequence.
  • No connection to the response formats slide, which arrives two slides later and supplies the fixed options this slide's block 1 depends on.
  • No treatment of the middle ground — a fixed list with an "other, please specify" option is nowhere in the material.
  • No labels on the table itself, which is where this page began.
Check before you proceed

Before you settle the question types in your instrument

Four checks. You can say, for every question, whether its answer is constrained or open, and why. You have a stated analysis route for every open question, taken from outside this material. You have not used the words structured or unstructured in your write-up without saying which sense you mean. And if you have reproduced this advantages and disadvantages comparison anywhere, you have supplied the block labels yourself and said so.
