‘The advantage of using qualitative methods is that they generate rich, detailed data that leave the participants' perspectives intact and provide multiple contexts for understanding the phenomenon under study. In this way, qualitative research can be used to vividly demonstrate phenomena or to conduct cross-case comparisons and analysis of individuals or groups.’

The list that follows is introduced with an explicit hedge: ‘Among the specific strengths of using qualitative methods to study social science research problems is the ability to:’. Among makes the list non-exhaustive. Ten is the count of the items as printed, not a count the source states.

That framing sentence is worth holding on to for a different reason. It claims cross-case comparison as a headline advantage, and the slide deck states that qualitative researchers may be opposed to methods that attempt to summarise across individuals because each individual is unique — one of the eleven statements set out on what qualitative researchers believe. The two documents supplied for the same topic take opposite views of the same operation.

Item 6 gives extended fieldwork or observation as an example of a change occurring during a study. No duration is attached to extended anywhere in the material. Item 9 introduces research subjects, one of five different labels the material uses for the people being studied without ever distinguishing them.

Items one to seven and item nine end with semicolons; item eight ends with a full stop; and item nine carries the closing ‘and,’ that conventionally marks the penultimate item — yet item ten follows it.

The connectives place the terminator in the wrong position, which indicates an item was added or reordered after the list was written. The two limitations, in full

The limitations section of the notes is four sentences long. It carries a sub-heading spelled Limitations of qualitative enquiry, against inquiry elsewhere in the same document, and it opens with a principle that promises far more than the section delivers.

‘Most of the limitations you find in using qualitative research techniques also reflect their inherent strengths.’ Preserve the hedge: most.

Limitation one: ‘For example, small sample sizes help you investigate research problems in a comprehensive and in-depth manner. However, small sample sizes undermine opportunities to draw useful generalizations from or make broad recommendations based upon the findings.’

Limitation two: ‘Additionally, as the primary instrument of investigation, qualitative researchers are often imbedded in the cultures and experiences of others. However, being culturally embedded increases the opportunity for bias to enter into the way data is gathered, interpreted, and reported.’

The three stages named in limitation two are worth using directly, because they are the most operationally specific thing the section contains: bias enters the way data is gathered, the way it is interpreted, and the way it is reported. That gives you three places to look, which is more than the reflexivity paragraph offers.

Eight strengths have no stated limitation, and the source says they should

The section's own principle — that most limitations reflect inherent strengths — sets up an expectation of a limitation for each strength. Two are supplied. Against a ten-item strengths list the treatment is markedly asymmetric: roughly one fifth of the space is given to limitations.

Do not read the silence as an endorsement. The source does not claim the other eight strengths are cost-free; it simply stops. If your methodology chapter needs a limitation for holism, for descriptive capability or for responsiveness to local conditions, you will need a second source, and you should not attribute one to this material.

Four disagreements matter enough to state on the page, because each one will surface as soon as you try to write the strengths and limitations paragraphs together. In every case both positions are in the supplied material and the source acknowledges neither.

A large claim made in a subordinate clause

Limitation two contains the phrase ‘as the primary instrument of investigation’. That the researcher is the instrument is a substantial methodological claim; it is stated in passing and never developed, defined, or connected to the topic's stated objective of designing appropriate research tools.

Both of the topic's stated objectives — design appropriate research tools, and evaluate types of variables — are recorded as undelivered. Read this page as an account of what the approach is good and bad at, not as instruction in building the instrument. What the researcher-as-instrument claim implies is taken up on reflexivity and the researcher's position.

Writing the section without overclaiming or apologising

A limitations section that reads as an apology invites the reader to discount the findings; one that reads as a defence invites them to look for what was hidden.   1. Claim only the strengths your design actually exercises

    Of the ten, most studies genuinely exercise three or four. Claiming a holistic view when you ran six interviews in one directorate is the commonest way this paragraph loses credibility.

  2. State the sample limitation in the source's own terms

    Small samples support depth and undermine generalisation and broad recommendation. That is the whole of the source's claim and it is defensible. Do not add a threshold the source does not give.

  3. Name the three stages where bias can enter

    Gathering, interpreting, reporting. Say what you did at each. This turns an admission into evidence of control, which is the difference between apologising and reporting.

  4. Declare the flexibility conflict if your design relied on flexibility

    If you shifted focus during fieldwork, say so and say why. The material treats the same act as a strength in one document and as ad hoc in the other; naming the tension is stronger than picking a side silently.

  5. Do not import limitations you cannot source

    Eight of the ten strengths have no stated limitation here. If you need one, cite the text you took it from rather than attributing it to teaching material that does not contain it.
