Mixed Methods and Triangulation

Definition, perspective-taking and verification are three distinct claims about what triangulation is for. The source states them within three sentences and offers no rule for choosing between them.

Source gap

Mixed methods itself is never defined

The only definition offered on a slide about mixed methods is a definition of triangulation - and the same slide's framing sentence describes triangulation as "one of the first rationales" for mixed methods, which is explicitly not the same thing as mixed methods.

So the reader is given a definition of the rationale in place of a definition of the approach, and the three named kinds of the rationale are bare labels. If your design combines approaches, you will need a definition of mixed methods from a text you can cite; the material does not contain one.

The stated benefits and the stated issues

The second slide is more substantial. It offers benefits under the heading "Triangulation has several benefits for your work" and then a list headed "Issues to consider".

Caution

"Several" is the source's word, not a count

The slide says "several benefits" and prints three. Three is what is on the slide; the source does not commit to a number, so do not cite it as "the three benefits of triangulation" as though the material had enumerated them.

The third benefit as printed contains a grammatical slip in the original. It is reproduced above with the verb corrected and no change of sense.

The week states three learning objectives, one of which is "Determine benefits and disadvantages of types". It is not delivered: no benefit and no disadvantage is stated for any of the ten methods it lists, or for any of the seven methodologies it names.

The six bullets above are the week's only benefits-and-issues structure, and they attach to triangulation - a rationale for combining approaches - rather than to any method or methodology. Said once, plainly, because it changes what you can claim this material taught you: it does not support a comparison of methods on their merits.

The first issue is three words long

"Different philosophical assumptions" is the whole of the first issue. What the differing assumptions are, why they matter to a combined design, and what a researcher is supposed to do about them are not stated anywhere in the week.

That is a substantial thing to leave as a bullet, because it is the issue most likely to be raised against a mixed design in an examination. The library's philosophy stream carries the underlying material - start with Methodological Coherence, Positivism and Post-Positivism and Constructionism and Constructivism - but the connection between those and this bullet is one this page is drawing, not one the source draws.

The benefit and the constraint that cancel each other

Benefit 1 claims that results from different logic and processes will "validate your results". Issue 3 states that statistical analysis relies on large samples, which is "unusual in qualitative research". Both are on the same slide, four lines apart.

If method triangulation pairs a small qualitative component with a quantitative one, the source gives no account of how the small component validates anything statistically, or of what validation without statistics would consist of. It asserts the benefit and states the disabling constraint without connecting them.

"Large" carries no threshold anywhere in the material

Across the research design and qualitative weeks the source never states a single numeric sample size. Treat any number you use as one you have brought in and must justify, not as a benchmark the material supports. Preserve the source's own hedge too: large samples are "unusual" in qualitative research, not impossible.

The comparison table the argument rests on

The slide immediately before the mixed-methods pair carries a four-row comparison of the two approaches, attributed in the source to a 2010 research-methods guide at page 105. It is the table a reader would use to decide what combining approaches would actually combine.

Three things about this table matter if you are going to build a combined design on it. First, the methodology row mixes categories: on the qualitative side, ethnomethodology, ethnography and action research are named methodologies while inductive, subjective and intuitive are descriptors of stance; on the quantitative side, reliable, valid, reproducible, objective and generalizable are claimed properties of the output rather than methodologies at all.

Second, that makes the table assert reliability and validity as intrinsic features of quantitative work - which contradicts the same week's own treatment of them as things a project must achieve, and its selection question asking whether any project "will be considered valid, reliable or trustworthy when reviewed". Both positions are in the week and neither is withdrawn; see Validity and Reliability.

Third, the data-type row is circular: the quantitative method is characterised by producing quantitative data. The hedge "generally" is doing all the work in that row, and it should be preserved whenever the row is quoted.

Three comparison tables, never presented together

This four-row table is one of three separate quantitative-versus-qualitative comparisons in the supplied material. The qualitative week carries a seven-row table attributed to a 2006 methods text, and its study notes carry a five-row table with no attribution at all.

The three use different dimensions, different row counts and different vocabulary, and they disagree - most visibly on whether qualitative work is inductive flatly, "often" inductive, or inductive as well as deductive. The source never puts them side by side and never says which is authoritative. Where the difference bears on your argument, cite the specific table you used and say so. The slide that follows the mixed-methods pair is titled "Methodological dilemma" and its complete textual content is that title and the words "What do you think?". The substance sits in an image that is not present in the supplied text.

The dilemma is never stated and cannot be reconstructed

The slide names a methodological dilemma and does not say what it is. Any instructional content it carried is unavailable, and this page will not guess at it - a plausible reconstruction of a dilemma the material never states would be an invention, not a recovery.

The prompt is also unaccompanied: "What do you think?" comes with no word count, no submission channel and no assessment weight, unlike the week's other reflective task, which carries a stated requirement of 225 words and an instruction to post it. Building a combined design from what is here

The material supports less than it appears to. What follows is a way of using it that stays inside what it actually says; the sequence is this page's, not the source's.

Working sequence for a combined design

  1. Say which sense of triangulation you mean

    Procedural, perspectival or verificationist, in one sentence, citing the definition you are using. The source's panel supports the first two and its framing sentence supports the third, so quoting the panel alone will not settle it.

  2. Name the kind, then specify it

    Researcher, theoretical or method triangulation. Then supply what the source does not: who or which theories or which methods, and how their outputs will be brought together.

  3. Decide in advance what disagreement means

    This is the question the two benefits and the third issue leave open. If your two components disagree, is that a failure of validation, or a finding about the phenomenon? Answer it before you collect, and record the answer.

  4. Cost the second component honestly

    The source's second issue - practicalities of data collection making simultaneous analysis difficult - is the one that most often ends mixed designs in practice. Two components mean two instruments, two ethics positions and two analysis passes.

  5. State the philosophical position once

    The source raises differing philosophical assumptions and stops. You cannot, because a reader will ask. Take a position, state it early, and keep the rest of the design consistent with it.

  6. Do not promise statistical validation from a small component

What to carry forward

  1. Two slides on mixed methods and no definition of mixed methods. What is defined is triangulation, which the same slide calls a rationale for mixed methods rather than the thing itself.
