Where Research Questions and Hypotheses Live

Only one of five examined works uses hypotheses. Where the other four put their questions, aims and purpose statements — and the one pattern worth copying outright.

One in five, not twenty per cent

Exactly one of these five works uses hypotheses. That is a count of five documents chosen because they were available, not a sample of the field, and it supports no claim about how often hypotheses are used in project management research generally.

What each placement commits you to

Placement is not presentation. A question stated in chapter one and never mentioned again behaves differently from one restated at the end of the literature review, which behaves differently again from a hypothesis adjudicated in the conclusion.

IN CHAPTER ONE ONLY

Sets scope, holds you to little

Exemplar B's six research questions appear in section 1.2 as a bulleted list and are never repeated. They orient the reader and then quietly stop governing the document — the hypotheses take over.

AFTER THE REVIEW

Makes the gap do the work

When the question follows the literature, the reader can see it was produced by the gap rather than assumed. Exemplar C places its questions immediately after each gap statement, which is why they read as earned.

REPEATED AT THREE POINTS

Holds a paper together without questions

Exemplar D has no questions. Its two-part purpose statement appears in near-identical form in the abstract, at the end of the introduction and at the end of the review. The repetition is the spine.

NOWHERE

Costs you the ability to answer

Exemplar E states only prose aims. Because no question is posed, no finding can be cleanly said to answer one — its central claim ends up asserted rather than adjudicated.

Exemplar B derives seven hypotheses from its literature, each set in bold immediately after the paragraph that motivates it, each introduced by the same formula: based on the above discussions, hypothesis n is proposed.

It then restates all seven verbatim in the conclusion with a one-word verdict appended — not supported, partially supported, supported. One was rejected.

This is the single most transferable structural device in the five works. It makes the thesis self-auditing: a reader can check, in one page, whether the study answered what it set out to answer. It also makes a negative result presentable rather than embarrassing.

Note what the formula does. Placing each hypothesis directly after the literature that motivates it makes the derivation inspectable — the reader never has to take on trust that the hypothesis came from the field. Questions and objectives as a matched pair

Exemplar C uses a second device worth noting: every set of research questions is immediately restated as a matching list of objectives in infinitive form — to recognise, to investigate, to explore — one objective per question, in the same order.

What the pairing buys

  • A question states what you want to know; an objective states what you will do about it
  • One-to-one mapping makes coverage checkable — an objective with no question is scope creep, a question with no objective is unanswerable
  • The objectives become the methodology chapter's structure almost unedited
  • An examiner can verify completeness without reading the findings

Question forms observed across the five

  • Open interrogative — how can X be measured?
  • Confirmatory — can it be confirmed that X?, doing hypothesis-like work without being a hypothesis
  • Relational — is there a direct relationship between X and Y?
  • Extent — to what extent has X become accepted?
  • Residual — which tools, other than those already identified in previous studies, ...?
Note

The residual-category question

Exemplar C's fifth question in its third paper deliberately excludes what the literature already found, asking only what lies outside it. That is a question designed to generate new material rather than test existing material, and it produced fifty-five additional items beyond those in the literature — a finding of that study only.

It is a cheap addition to any instrument and it is the question most likely to surface something the review missed.

Publishing without a question

Two of the five works state no research question. Both were published — one peer reviewed, one in conference proceedings. This is worth confronting rather than dismissing, because it cuts against the way research is usually taught.

Both approaches are published. Only one of them survives scrutiny intact.

Caution

A purpose statement can work; prose aims usually cannot

The difference between the two is that exemplar D's purpose statement is specific and repeated — two named things the paper will do, stated identically three times, so a reader can hold the paper to both. Exemplar E's aims are neither, and its conclusion drifts into a claim the design cannot support.

If you choose not to pose formal questions, adopt exemplar D's discipline: state exactly what the study will do, in a form specific enough to fail, and repeat it verbatim wherever the reader might have lost it.

Deciding for your own project

What the evidence suggests

IfYour study tests directional propositions derived from theory

ThenEither remove them or answer them. Unanswered questions in chapter one are the most visible structural fault an examiner can find.

What to carry forward

  1. One of five examined works used hypotheses. Questions, aims and purpose statements are all legitimate alternatives.
  2. Derive each hypothesis immediately after the literature that motivates it, then restate all of them in the conclusion with a verdict.
  3. Pair every question with one objective in infinitive form. The pairing makes coverage checkable and seeds your methodology chapter.
  4. Add a residual-category question — what lies outside what the literature already found. It is cheap and it surfaces what your review missed.
  5. If you state no question, use a specific purpose statement repeated verbatim. Vague prose aims leave the central claim with nothing to adjudicate it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need hypotheses?

Only if your study tests directional propositions you can derive from existing theory. One of the five examined works used them; the other four used questions, aims or a purpose statement, and all five were published or examined.

Where should my research questions go?

The strongest placement observed is immediately after the gap statement, so the reader sees the question was produced by the literature rather than assumed. Questions stated in chapter one and never revisited stop governing the document.

What is the difference between a research question and an objective?

A question states what you want to know; an objective states what you will do about it. One examined work paired them one-to-one in infinitive form, which makes coverage checkable and gives the methodology chapter its structure.

Can a study be published without any research question?
