Proposing Your Thesis Structure

One row of the component table asks you to describe a document that does not exist yet. This library holds the contents pages of examined work that does exist — and no two of them are built the same way.

Two words in the function do the work. Sequence is the order the argument will run in. Focus is what each chapter is about — and asking for both means a list of chapter titles does not satisfy the component, because a title gives the focus without the sequence's logic.

You are asked to propose a structure. No structure is supplied.

Nothing in the supplied teaching material gives a model thesis structure, a chapter count, a naming convention, or a worked example of a proposed structure section. The component tells you the format of the description and says nothing about what is being described.

This is a documented pattern in the same material rather than an isolated omission. One week's stated objectives include choosing writing styles and conventions, and the week contains no content on styles or conventions. Another records an objective about thesis structures with no supporting treatment. The proposed-structure component sits in the same category: a required output with no exemplar behind it.

The consequence is practical. Since the material supplies no model, the model has to come from somewhere else — your supervisor's requirement, your degree handbook, or examined work in your own field. A forecast you are told in advance you will not be held to

The material is unusually direct about the status of everything in a proposal: "These plans are not binding, in that they may well change substantially as you progress in the research. However, they are an indication to your faculty of your direction and discipline as a researcher."

That sentence applies to every component, and it applies hardest to this one. You are describing chapters for findings you have not obtained, about data you have not collected, from participants who have not agreed. Of all the forecasts in the document, this is the one most exposed to what actually happens.

What the section is not being read for

  • Accuracy — the plans may well change substantially and the reader knows it
  • Chapter count — no number is specified anywhere
  • Titles — a title can change without the structure changing
  • Length estimates — the component asks for none

What it is being read for

  • Whether the sequence carries an argument or just a process
  • Whether every chapter has a job that the chapter before it made possible
  • Whether the design section's commitments have chapters to land in
  • Direction and discipline — the two things the source says a proposal indicates

The freedom is real but it is not unconditional. A structure that changes because the findings turned out differently is the research working. A structure that changes because it was never thought through is a discipline problem, and it is the second kind the section is designed to expose. Two formats, and what each one exposes

The component permits either a few lines per chapter, or a proposed table of contents. They are not equivalent, and choosing between them is a decision about what you want a reader to see.

Practice note

Doing both, briefly

The source does not prescribe this; it is a synthesis. Supply a short contents list and attach one sentence to each entry stating the chapter's job. It costs a page and it satisfies both halves of the function — sequence from the list, focus from the sentences.

If you cannot write the sentence for a chapter without repeating its title, that chapter does not have a job yet. It has a name.

Five examined works, five structures

This library surveyed five published research works in project management. Their structures were a monograph, a thesis carrying two separate reviews, a portfolio of papers, a journal article and a conference paper. No two shared a structure, and none of them matched the template most students are shown.

Everything on this page about examined structures describes those five documents and nothing beyond them. Five is not a sample of a field, the works were not selected to be representative, and no proportion, frequency or norm can be drawn from them.

What five different structures across five documents does establish is narrower and still useful: there is no single correct structure to propose, so a chapter list submitted at proposal stage is a hypothesis about a document rather than a commitment to a form.

THE LITERATURE

Where the review goes, and how many times

Format decides this and nothing else does. In the portfolio structure, each paper has to stand alone — which forces the literature review to appear three times, once per paper. In a monograph it appears once. That is a structural consequence of the format, chosen before a word is written.

THE METHOD

Whether a methodology chapter exists at all

Across five journal papers examined separately for this library, none had a methodology chapter in the thesis sense, and two had no empirical method at all — their contribution was analytical. Venue determines this. A reader trained only on thesis structure misreads those papers as incomplete when they are conventional for where they were published.

THE FRONT MATTER

Order is house style, not rule

The two examined doctoral theses ordered their front matter differently from each other. If you are proposing a contents page, front-matter order is the part least worth agonising over and the part most likely to be dictated to you later.

THE BACK MATTER

The part nobody forecasts

In those same two examined theses the appendices ran to roughly a third and a quarter of the whole document. That is a finding about two specific works, not a rule — but a proposed structure that ends at the conclusion is forecasting a fraction of the document it will produce.

What the forecast reliably gets wrong

Three errors turn up often enough to be worth designing against, and all three are visible in the proposal rather than only in hindsight.

Three predictable failures of a chapter forecast

The process chapter list. Chapters named introduction, literature, method, findings, discussion, conclusion, with descriptions that restate the names. This forecasts the process of doing research rather than the structure of an argument about something. It is not wrong, and it is not yet a proposal.

The missing back matter. Appendices treated as an afterthought, when the instruments, participant statements and raw material they hold may be a substantial fraction of the document — and are the same documents an ethics committee will require. The unearned findings chapter. One findings chapter proposed against three research questions, or three findings chapters proposed against one instrument. The chapter plan and the design section have to describe the same study, and this is where the mismatch shows first.

The third of those is the useful one, because it runs in both directions. If your design section commits to two participant groups and two instruments, the chapter plan should show where each lands. If the chapter plan proposes a chapter the design cannot fill, one of the two documents is wrong. Writing the chapter descriptions

The source's limit — a few lines or a small paragraph — is tight enough that a pattern helps. What follows is a synthesis rather than a source requirement, built from what the function asks for: sequence and focus.

A three-part pattern for each chapter

  1. State the chapter's job

    One clause saying what this chapter establishes that no other chapter does. If two chapters have the same job, you have one chapter written twice.

  2. Name its input

    What the chapter needs from the ones before it. This is where the sequence becomes visible: a chapter whose input is nothing can be moved anywhere, which means the order is arbitrary.

  3. Name its output

    What the next chapter can now do that it could not before. A chapter with no output is a digression, however interesting the material in it.

Run that pattern across the whole list and the sequence tests itself. Chapters chain input to output, and the point where the chain breaks is the point where the structure has not been thought through — usually between the literature and the design, or between the findings and the discussion.

If you are proposing a table of contents

The formatting rule that applies to the proposal's own contents page applies here too if you supply one: a numbered hierarchy of titles and subtitles, and "don't use more than four digits".

Four levels is the depth limit. A proposed structure numbered to five levels is describing a filing system rather than an argument, and at proposal stage — before any of the content exists — that depth of subdivision is a forecast nobody can hold.

Checking the proposed structure

Before this section goes in

  • Every chapter has a stated job that no other chapter has
  • Every chapter names what it takes from the ones before it and what it makes possible for the ones after
  • The order can be defended — you can say why chapter four cannot precede chapter three
  • Every commitment in the research design section has a chapter to land in
  • Every chapter the plan proposes can be filled by the study the design section describes
  • The number of findings chapters matches the shape of the data you will actually have
  • Back matter appears, and the appendices reflect the instruments your design and ethics application require
  • If a contents page is supplied, the hierarchy is numbered to no more than four levels
  • Descriptions stay inside a few lines or a small paragraph, as the component asks
  • No description merely restates the chapter's title
Check before you proceed

The reordering test

Swap any two adjacent chapters in your proposed list and read the descriptions again. If the sequence still reads plausibly, those two chapters are in an order you chose rather than an order the argument requires — and the section has described a sequence without justifying one.

Repeat down the list. The pairs that cannot be swapped are your structure; the pairs that can are a table of contents pretending to be one.

What to carry forward

  1. The component asks for sequence and focus. A list of chapter titles supplies focus without sequence and does not satisfy it.
  2. The material never supplies a model structure to propose — the same undelivered-objective pattern as its stated objective on writing styles and conventions. The model has to come from your supervisor or from examined work.
