We are proud to present our collaboration with OVENTUS on an innovative project aimed at improving the lives of sleep apnea patients. This project involved designing a custom mouthpiece that is tailored to each patient’s unique oral anatomy, providing a comfortable and effective solution for managing sleep apnea.

The Problem

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, which can lead to a range of health issues, including daytime fatigue, cardiovascular problems, and decreased quality of life. Traditional treatments, such as CPAP machines, can be cumbersome and uncomfortable for some patients, leading to low compliance rates.

The Solution

To address this challenge, OVENTUS developed a custom mouthpiece that is designed to keep the airway open during sleep. Unlike one-size-fits-all solutions, this mouthpiece is personalized for each patient, ensuring a perfect fit and maximum comfort. The mouthpiece works by gently holding the jaw in a forward position, preventing the airway from collapsing.

The Process

The creation of each custom mouthpiece involves a seamless and patient-friendly process:

  1. Scanning: Patients visit their local chemist to have their mouth scanned using advanced imaging technology. This scan captures the precise dimensions and contours of the patient’s oral cavity.
  2. Data Transmission: The scan data is securely sent to OVENTUS for processing.
  3. Design: As authorized designers, we receive the scan data and use a specialized software developed by CSIRO to create a 3D model of the mouthpiece. This software allows us to tailor the design to the exact specifications of each patient’s mouth.
  4. 3D Printing: Once the design is finalized, the mouthpiece is 3D printed at OVENTUS’s state-of-the-art facility, ensuring high precision and quality.

Our Role

As authorized designers, we played a crucial role in the design phase of the process. Each day, we received multiple scan files and used our expertise to create custom mouthpiece designs. This involved:

  • Analyzing the scan data to understand the patient’s oral anatomy.
  • Using the CSIRO software to generate a 3D model that fits perfectly.
  • Ensuring that the design meets the functional requirements for treating sleep apnea.
  • Collaborating with OVENTUS to refine the designs and incorporate feedback.
