NSW Engineering and Design Drafting Sector Sees Major Contract Awards, New Tenders, and Council Decisions in June 2025

Sydney, NSW – June 22, 2025:
The New South Wales engineering and design drafting industry is experiencing a surge of activity this month, with major government contracts awarded, new tenders announced, and significant council decisions shaping the future of infrastructure across the state.

Major Contracts Awarded

The NSW Government has awarded a $30 million contract to Huon Contractors Pty Ltd for the Marshalls Creek Bridge upgrade in Wagga Wagga. The project, set to begin major construction in August, will expand the busy Sturt Highway bridge to four lanes, addressing the needs of more than 20,000 daily commuters.

In the energy sector, the Hunter Transmission Project is moving forward, with the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) scheduled for mid-2025. The $100 million project will deliver a new 500kV overhead transmission line between Bayswater and Olney, supporting the state’s energy transition and grid reliability.

Tenders and Procurement Opportunities

Blacktown City Council has launched a Request for Tender (C9/2025) for a panel of contractors to deliver over $600 million in civic and community infrastructure projects over the next five years. The tender, which closed on June 18, is part of the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program and is expected to transform the city’s public amenities.

AEMO Services is managing the sixth round of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap Tender, seeking 1 GW of long-duration energy storage. Registrations closed in late May, with project bids due by June 10, as the state accelerates its transition away from coal-fired power.

Transport for NSW has also flagged an upcoming tender for Wharf Maintenance Contracts, with opportunities for Tier 1-3 contractors to participate in the state’s ongoing transport infrastructure maintenance.

Council Decisions and Local Government Updates

At the local level, Federation Council and Central Darling Shire Council held meetings this month to address key engineering and infrastructure projects. Federation Council reviewed progress on the Howlong Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route and Holbeach Street upgrades, while Central Darling Shire Council discussed a range of infrastructure developments across the region.

Infrastructure Pipeline and Policy Changes

The NSW State Infrastructure Plan 2024-25 outlines a $118.3 billion pipeline, with transport, education, water, and health projects dominating the agenda. The government’s new procurement policy, effective January 2025, requires agencies to justify any contracts over $7.5 million awarded to foreign suppliers, a move designed to boost local business participation in the $42 billion annual procurement market.

Industry Events and Professional Development

The sector is also looking ahead to key industry events, including the IPWEA NSW 2025 International Public Works Conference in August and the Disaster Recovery Forum in November. These events aim to foster innovation and resilience in public infrastructure delivery.

Outlook

With significant investments, a robust tender pipeline, and new policies favoring local suppliers, the NSW engineering and design drafting sector is poised for continued growth. However, industry leaders caution that market capacity and workforce development will be critical to delivering on the state’s ambitious infrastructure agenda.
